Three Ways to Build a New Dish with Granola

Waking up to sweet, crunchy granola is a morning routine we never tire of. But experimenting with granola outside the breakfast bowl can yield some amazing taste and texture sensations. Branching out with granola is a lot like trying wheat germ in new and different ways—as you’ll see below, you could add a sprinkle of Kretschmer Wheat Germ to just about any of these recipes the same way granola is added.

If you’re ready to discover something new with your granola, take a look:

1. Baked sweet treats

Our editorial advisor and guru of all things prepared in a muffin tin, Matthew Kadey loves his granola, which he calls a “late night vice.” He discovered a delicious way to mix it up with granola by including it in these Strawberry Granola Muffins.

Other baked goodies especially conducive to a granola boost include scones like these Cranberry Orange Pecan Scones and cookies.

2. Salads

Granola can be found perking up salads of all kinds, adding texture to this Cape Cod Chicken Salad, for example. And it has become a favorite topping on green salads. Indeed, says Matthew Kadey, “I’ve heard some chefs call granola the new crouton when it comes to salad.” Try livening up your leafy green salads using granola, like in this Arugula Salad with Yogurt Dressing, this Pear and Granola Salad with Greek Yogurt Poppyseed Dressing and this Grape and Watercress Salad with Caraway and Granola. It particularly mixes well with slightly sweet dressings. Add a tablespoon of Kretschmer Wheat Germ on these salads for added nutrition.

3. Casseroles sweet and savory

For a special-occasion breakfast or brunch, a French toast casserole impresses beautifully and deliciously, like in this Baked French Toast with Maple Syrup and Granola. Similarly, this Sweet Potato Casserole with granola topping looks rich and delicious.

Take a walk on the wild side by incorporating granola into a savory casserole like this Broccoli Granola Casserole or this main dish Curried Granola Casserole. Similar to using wheat germ in place of bread crumbs, ground or lightly crushed granola serves as an excellent crumb topping. Try it on any casserole that would benefit from a slightly sweet, slightly crunchy topping.
