Fall-Flavored Smoothies with a Nutritious Boost

Maple pecan smoothie with wheat germFall brings the anticipation of favorite seasonal dishes like apple pie, rich slow cooker dinners, butternut squash soup and … smoothies?

In case you packed away your smoothie recipes with your swimsuit and sunscreen, we’ve created a few more to keep on hand while pears are ripe and pumpkin plentiful. These smoothies all conjure autumn and provide a tasty way to keep your cool-weather diet healthy, adding wheat germ for extra fiber, zinc, vitamin E and folate.

Both Kretschmer Original Toasted Wheat Germ and Kretschmer Honey Crunch Wheat Germ work well in these recipes, so use whichever one you have on hand!

Pumpkin Pie Smoothie

The ultimate autumn flavor favorite — pumpkin — takes center stage here for a delightful smoothie that works for breakfast, an afternoon snack or dessert (top with a dollop of whipped cream and graham cracker crumbs if you really want to indulge). Try using leftover butternut squash in place of the pumpkin for another fall flavor twist.

Serves 2

1/2 cup low-fat vanilla Greek yogurt

1/2 cup fat-free milk

1/2 cup pumpkin (canned or fresh)

1 tablespoon Kretschmer Wheat Germ

1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon ground ginger

1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 graham cracker

1 1/2 tablespoons maple syrup

1 1/2 cups ice

Blend all ingredients and serve immediately.

Maple Pecan Smoothie (See image above.)

The delicious combination of maple, pecan and banana will make this filling smoothie a household favorite. Try swapping out the banana for 1 1/2 cups frozen strawberries for a different but equally tasty version.

Serves 2

1/2 cup raw pecans, soaked at least 1 hour or overnight to soften

1 1/2 cups almond milk

1 frozen banana

2 tablespoons maple syrup

1 tablespoon Kretschmer Wheat Germ

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup ice

Blend all ingredients and serve immediately.

Autumn Pear and Kale Smoothie

Refreshing and energizing, pear and kale come together in a smoothie that’s perfect for an after-workout pick-me-up.

Serves 1

1/2 pear (peel on)

1 cup loosely packed kale

1 frozen banana

1 cup apple juice

1 tablespoon Kretschmer Wheat Germ

1 1/2 cups ice

Blend all ingredients and serve immediately.

Warm Apple Oat Smoothie

When sweater weather arrives, a cold smoothie may not be what you crave. So turn up the temperature and whirl together this mixture, created by our advisory team’s Matthew Kadey, to beat the chill.

Serves 2

2 cups apple cider

1/2 cup water

1/3 cup rolled or quick oats

1/3 cup chopped pitted dates

1/4 cup unsalted almonds

1 tablespoon pure maple syrup

1 tablespoon Kretschmer Wheat Germ

1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground ginger

1/8 teaspoon ground cloves

Place apple cider and water in small saucepan over medium heat and heat until just under a simmer. Add warmed apple cider to blender along with remaining ingredients and blend until smooth. Serve immediately.
