Top Weight Loss Tips for Good Health

Woman measuring her waist in a kitchenWelcome to 2014! It’s going to be a great year, especially if you can accomplish some of your resolutions. If weight loss tops the list, we offer 10 tips to help you meet your goal — the healthy way. While there are plenty of ways to lose extra weight, many of them can do more harm than good. Our first tip to shedding extra pounds the right way is the most important: Make good food choices — foods that keep you satisfied, don’t add lots of calories and contain fiber. These foods include fruits, vegetables, whole grains and wheat germ.

2. Make your calories count. Fancy sports bars not only cost a lot of money, but also have as many as 350 calories each. For fewer calories, you could eat a turkey sandwich or a yogurt parfait with fruit and wheat germ and feel more satisfied after!

3. Write down everything you eat. It’s important to be accountable for all the food going past your lips.

4. Cook your own food. This way you know exactly what’s in the food you’re eating. When you eat out, you’re likely to eat more calories, fat and sodium than you would if you cooked at home.

5. Watch what you drink with and in between meals. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cutting back on caloric beverages is a great way to maintain a healthy weight. Specialty coffees, sweetened beverages such as teas, lemonade and sports drinks and even 100 percent fruit juices contribute extra calories.

6. Meet with a registered dietitian nutritionist or join a weight-loss group. If you need to lose more than a few pounds to get back to good health, working with a dietitian or weight-loss group can be a great motivator. According to the National Weight Control Registry, which tracks thousands of people who have lost weight and kept that weight off for long time periods, more than half of individuals who kept the weight off belonged to some type of weight-loss program. Partnering up with a friend or family member can also help.

7. Add exercise to your daily routine. The National Weight Control Registry reports that 94 percent of people who lost weight and kept it off increased their physical activity. This doesn’t necessarily mean working out in a gym. Walking regularly several times a week works!

8. Don’t starve yourself, avoid certain food groups or skip meals. You’ll make up those calories one way or another — often at your next meal or on a later binge after feeling deprived.

9. Remember: Diet is a four-letter word. Don’t think of yourself as on it or off it: The most successful weight loss happens when you change behaviors to ones that are sustainable.

10. Don’t give up what you love. You can still eat your favorite foods — just be mindful of how often you splurge and how big your portions are. For example, you don’t have to eat oatmeal every day for breakfast if you’re trying to lose weight. If you love pancakes and waffles, try these Pumpkin Waffles with Wheat Germ and Berry Delicious Wheat Germ Pancake recipes for a special Saturday or Sunday treat. You can enjoy these dishes even more knowing you get the extra health boost wheat germ provides.
