Making Granola Fun for the Whole Family
It’s easy for adults to love granola, with all its earthy goodness. Sometimes, though, children can be a little, shall we say, skeptical about those mounds of nuts, oats and dried fruits resting in their bowls. The great thing about granola is there’s so much you can do with it, it’s easy to find a way to have the kids clamoring for it before long. Try some of these ideas:
Granola breakfast buffet
Start with a large bowl of our Homemade Granola with Wheat Germ or this Alpine Apple Granola recipe as the first stop in the breakfast buffet. Scoop some granola into your kids’ bowls and then let them have at it, adding healthy and fun toppings set out in individual bowls. Provide healthy options and at least one just-for-fun ingredient. Breakfast toppings might include:
Kretschmer Honey Crunch Wheat Germ
Your kids’ favorite fun cereal (a tablespoon or two won’t hurt)
Chocolate syrup (buffet monitor required!)
Dark chocolate chips
Yogurt parfaits with granola
The visual appeal of a parfait in a tall glass bowl or dish never gets old. For a protein-packed parfait, use Greek yogurt mixed with a little honey, cinnamon and Kretschmer Wheat Germ. Layer it with granola and berries or banana slices for a nutritious breakfast treat they’ll have a hard time resisting. Homemade granola will almost always be a healthier option for the tykes compared to sugary store-bought boxed cereals.
Surprise your family by bringing out the granola for dessert. Its lightly sweet taste and crunchy texture provide the perfect topping for ice cream or frozen yogurt. Take a tip from the breakfast buffet above and create a sundae bar, offering granola (more than one type if you have it), chocolate chips, whipped cream, sliced fruit and other fun toppings.
